Skyborne Sailing

Catamaran sailing in the Hauraki Gulf

A bit about us…

The people
Alex and Lesley Stone are long-term shipmates, having sailed together for forty years. In their youth, they were a regatta-winning racing dinghy team, and Alex sailed in four world championships in the trapeeze dinghy Fireball class. They have crossed oceans in keelboats and catamarans.

They both have Coastal Skipper certification through Coastguard NZ, and a range of other first aid, radio and safety certificates and have introduced many people to the joys of sailing.

Aboard Skyborne, they offer a stress-free introduction to the many benefits of fast modern cruising catamarans – something many sailors have not yet experienced.

Come sailing with us!

The Boat
Skyborne is a 12m fast sailing catamaran from the drawing board of renowned designer, Geoff Schionning of Australia. She was built in Queensland and was sailed across the Tasman to get to her new home, Waiheke Island, New Zealand. Skyborne has dual steering wheels, and an efficient, easily-handled sailing rig, sporting new North Sails. Accommodation is two double and two single berths, and a toilet in the bow of each hull. The popular ‘galley-up’ configuration makes food preparation – and serving, through the window to the cockpit – a breeze. She is a lovely boat to sail – no heeling, with a good turn of speed, allowing quick access to favourite anchorages.

What we offer

A day sail in the Hauraki Gulf
Come aboard for just a day. We’ll quickly introduce you to the systems on the boat, hoist sails with the minimum of fuss, and be underway, under sail, ASAP. Before long you’ll be steering the boat, while we serve a sandwich lunch. You find Skyborne to be responsive, and steering great fun. We’ll go check out an island or two, before returning in the evening light to the mooring in Putiki Bay, Waiheke Island. We can accommodate up to five guests on the day sail.

A weekend overnight cruise
Come, spend a little more time on the boat, and experience the calm of an evening anchorage, and the serenity of the next morning. You’ll find the bunks aboard Skyborne to be spacious and comfortable, accommodating one couple and two others. Departing and returning to our mooring at Putiki Bay, Waiheke island.

Longer cruises by arrangement
Here’s where you will be able to explore the outer reaches of the Hauraki Gulf – as far perhaps (weather permitting) as the Coromandel and Great Barrier Island. You will really get into the rhythm of the cruising life, where every day can either see total relaxation, or new horizons. Departing and returning to any place of your choosing around Auckland.

Please contact us for more information of any of these cruise packages.
